I am running into the same issue with the windows version I have been trying to tinker with it on and off for at least a month now and have not been able to figure out what is going on. I have used this client in the past to afk on the server I am playing on and never had a issue. Now that i am getting back into the same server tried to use the setting that I have always used and I am getting the same exact error message as you. Would love some help figuring out what is going on as it has become a bit annoying to play the my server and lose progress cause server reboots and I am not physically around to reload my afk account.
