<title>Carloop Not Communicating with Vehicle’s OBD-II Port</title>

<p>I recently set up my Carloop device and followed the initial setup guide; but I’m having trouble getting it to communicate with my vehicle’s OBD-II port. <img src="https://carloop.dyndns.org/images/emoji/twitter/upside_down_face.png?v=12" title=":upside_down_face:" class="emoji" alt=":upside_down_face:" loading="lazy" width="20" height="20"></p>
<p>The device powers on correctly when plugged in, and I can connect it to my computer, but I’m not receiving any data from the car’s ECU. I’ve tried using different vehicles to rule out compatibility issues, but the problem persists. <img src="https://carloop.dyndns.org/images/emoji/twitter/upside_down_face.png?v=12" title=":upside_down_face:" class="emoji" alt=":upside_down_face:" loading="lazy" width="20" height="20"></p>
<p>I have double-checked my connections and verified that the CAN library is correctly installed. I’ve also attempted to send basic requests to the OBD-II system but am not getting any response. Could this be due to specific vehicle manufacturer restrictions / is there a common troubleshooting step I might be missing? <img src="https://carloop.dyndns.org/images/emoji/twitter/thinking.png?v=12" title=":thinking:" class="emoji" alt=":thinking:" loading="lazy" width="20" height="20"> I have checked <a href="https://carloop.dyndns.org/c/getting-started/5" class="inline-onebox">Getting Started - Carloop Community</a> <a href="https://www.igmguru.com/cloud-computing/microsoft-azure-solution-architect-az-300-training" rel="noopener nofollow ugc">Azure</a> guide for reference .</p>
<p>Has anyone else encountered this issue when getting started with Carloop? I’d appreciate any advice on debugging this connection issue and ensuring that my setup is correctly configured.</p>

<description><![CDATA[ <p>Although you probably could find the ID for resetting center point and get your ecu to send it, if you just get the system to not have any trouble codes by getting it an RPM and VSS signal, any decent repair shop with a bi-directional scan tool should be able to reset that for you if you don’t have your own. It cannot be reset if there are any codes in the EPAS computer. Once I made this simulator for my car, all the trouble codes went away and I was able to use a Snap-on scan tool at work to recenter the torque sensor. You would need to attach an OBD2 port to your CAN wiring going between the ECU and EPAS module, then you can use a scan tool to check or clear codes and recenter the torque sensor. There is a procedure from Toyota that uses the scan tool to do it. Basically you hook up the scanner, with the steering wheel pointed straight ahead on flat ground, then push the “button” on the scanner screen, the scanner will then have you go through a series of key on/ key off/ key on and possibly turn the wheel left and right, it walks you through it on the screen. When your done, the module remembers where the center point is and it will make the return to center much better. I believe most people complaining online about return to center after going around a turn have the system in limp mode or the center point is unknown.</p> ]]></description>

<p>Yes, as you said, my Gen3 system is three-phase. As I’ve now got a handle on the rpm and speed side of things, I guess the only other subject I’d like to go further into is that of establishing the centre* point - it’d be really handy if I could do it via the S12, so I’ll need to find out what the ID for that is.</p>

I used the gen 2 column, from a 2008 specifically. I’m pretty sure they did change the column between the two generations, mine has a 12v dc brushed two wire motor, and I believe the gen 3 has a three phase AC brush-less motor. I’m like 80% sure the CAN id’s did not change. There is a thread on <a href="http://Pro-touring.com" rel="noopener nofollow ugc">Pro-touring.com</a> where a guy was using the column from a Subaru BRZ I think which is basically a rebadged Toyota and he used the same or very similar CAN id’s to mess with his, no idea if he actually finished the project however.</p>
<p>Yes, the 2C4 is rpm on gen 2 (80% sure on gen3) and doesn’t need to make any changes, a steady engine rpm input is all that is needed to get it to power on immediately without the 10 second delay.</p>
<p>0B4 is the speed id for gen 2. You would need to have the S12 vary the last three bits, where I have 06, 66, and B5. The 06 and 66 will change based off the speed using the formula in my code, and the B5 is a checksum, which will change as the first two bits change. That formula is also in my code above from August 18th, 2024.</p>
<p>The 0B4 Id is what lets the EPAS ECU think its still communicating with the Prius since it thinks it’s coming from the ABS controller, and that eliminates the “lost communication with ABS code” that puts it in limp mode. Once that’s eliminated you can actually use a scan tool to set the torque center point and the return to center ability gets way better as well.</p>
<p>That’s about as much as I can help, since I don’t have any experience with the S12 ECU, but even if you don’t get the assist variable working like factory, you could possibly get a set speed you like and have the ECU output it statically like I do, my car drives great with the max assist level (06 66 B5 = 10 mph).</p>

<p>Actually - I have a second question too… I’m fitting a Syvecs S12 ECU to the car, and as this has programmable CAN outputs it’d be really helpful to know what I should be transmitting to the Prius’ CAN.</p>
<p>I see from the above that 2C4 is engine rpm and 0B4 is vehicle speed - is that a) correct and b) applicable to a Gen3 Prius?</p>

<description><![CDATA[ <p>The code i posted on Aug 18, 2024 uses a library that includes the MCP2515 so it should work, if it does please post the results for future users. The original code from the top of this thread I’m not sure of. The code i posted originally has been running in my car reliably since 2020 using the particle photon board and a carloop can hitch which is basically the SN65HVD320. The most recent post on Aug 18 2024 also works on my test bench. I wanted to be able to recreate everything if I had a failure and the Photon and the CanHitch have been discontinued. Using the code from Aug 18 with an ESP32 board and either the SN65HVD320 or the MCP2515 should also work reliably.</p>
<p>You could add a pot to adjust the assist level or even use a speed sensor like the Prius/Yaris did originally, but the code as it is written wont support that, it will need modifying that is above my coding ability to read the inputs from the board and modify the can output code to vary the assist.</p>
<p>That said you can use the current code and change the b6 and b7 bytes per the formula listed in the comments on my code to change between the different assist levels to see what works best for you. My heavy American muscle car with a big V8 needs the max assist level to drive comfortably, so I left mine with b6 = 06 and b7 = 66 in hex, which is the equivalent of 10 mph. You may find your Mini is happier with a higher speed and less assist. You can always change the code and reflash until you are happy with the results.</p> ]]></description>

That original code has been working in my car since 2020 reliably, however the new particle stuff doesn’t have native CAN support, so I found a workaround solution, using the ESP32 board and the code I posted on Aug 18th. That code has been working on my test bench with a 08 Prius EPS system. I am also currently sniffing the CAN bus to add the code needed to turn on an EPS warning light if the Pruis EPS module has any codes set.</p> ]]></description>

<p>I am diving into a new project where I am trying to set up my Volkswagen Atlas (2019 model) to send data directly to AWS for storage and analysis. As I have seen many people using this in my surrounding. I’ve got Carloop up and running, and now I am looking to leverage AWS Big Data tools to collect and analyze all the information from my car.</p>
<p>I was doing research about the same I came across these resources/articles <a href="https://aws.amazon.com/solutions/case-studies/volkswagen-group-case-study/" class="inline-onebox" rel="noopener nofollow ugc">Volkswagen Group iSI Case Study | IoT | AWS</a> <a href="https://www.igmguru.com/blog/what-is-aws-big-data" rel="noopener nofollow ugc">what is AWS big data?</a>, however, they are information but I wanted to learn from community members.</p>
<p>Has anyone here done something similar? I’m particularly interested in any tips on configuring the data pipeline from Carloop to AWS, and what services you’d recommend for real-time processing and long-term storage. Any pitfalls to avoid or best practices to follow would be awesome to know.</p>

<p>This code sends the RPM message and the VSS message in sequence, at intervals of 100 ms. You can adjust the <code>vssMessage.data[5]</code> and <code>vssMessage.data[6]</code> values to simulate different speeds. This should help you avoid the limp mode and get the desired assist level from the EPS module.</p>

<description><![CDATA[ <p>Since the Carloop stuff has been discontinued, and Particle has replaced the Photon with the Photon2 which has no native CAN on its board, requiring an external MCP25625 board to convert SPI to CAN, I started searching for a workaround. I’ve got a solution that I’m still testing, but the prototype works on the bench.</p>
<p>I used an ESP-32 board and Arduino IDE. In particular, I bought this:<br>
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Development-Microcontroller-Integrated-Antenna-Amplifiers/dp/B09GK74F7N" class="inline-onebox" rel="noopener nofollow ugc">Amazon.com</a>, (AISN B09GK74F7N) Which is a ESP32-WROOM microcontroller, it replaces the Particle Photon which has been discontinued.</p>
<p>I also bought this: <a href="https://www.amazon.com/SN65HVD230-CAN-Board-Communication-Development/dp/B00KM6XMXO" class="inline-onebox" rel="noopener nofollow ugc">Amazon.com</a> (AISN B00KM6XMXO) Which replaces the Carloop CANHitch also discontinued. This is a waveshare SN65HVD320 board which is basically 99% identical to the CANHitch.</p>
<p>You’ll also need a buck converter to drop the car battery voltage to 5v for the ESP32.</p>
<p>Wiring is simple, 5v in from the buck converter to the VIN pin on the ESP32, ground from the buck converter to the GND pin on the ESP32, 3v3 pin on ESP32 to the 3.3V pin on the SN65 board. GND from ESP32 to GND on SN65. ESP32 Pin D4 (gpio4) to SN65 CANRx pin, and ESP32 D5 (gpio5) to SN65 CANTx pin.</p>
<p>The SN65 waveshare board has a 120 ohm terminating resistor onboard, so you’ll need to twist two wires together and attach them to the CAN H and CAN L terminals on the SN65. At the other end you’ll need to solder another 120ohm resistor as the second terminating resistor. Anywhere along the twisted pair (my twisted pair is only 1 foot long) you can splice in a OBD2 connector and the Prius EPS module. OBD2 connector is only needed if you wish to be able to check for codes or recenter the torque sensor in the future, it will also need 12v Bat, not ignition on pin 16 and ground on pins 4 and 5, pin 6 is CAN H and 14 is CAN L on the OBD2.</p>
<p>The buck converter will need an ignition hot 12v source and a ground. It can tee into the igniton 12v input to the Pruis EPS module so they power up together.</p>
<p>You’ll need to download the Arduino IDE, I’m running version 2.3.2.<br>
Start a new sketch, name it CAN_simulator or similar.</p>
<p>Follow online instructions about using a ESP32 board on Arduino, in the IDE, select Tools>>Board>>Boards Manager, and search ESP32 by Espressif Systems. DO NOT INSTALL THE LATEST VERSION IT WILL GIVE COMPILE ERRORS! Instead, install version 2.0.11 and refuse all updates.</p>
<p>Then you have to pick the correct brand of ESP32 board, so go to: Tools>>Boards>>ESP32>>DOIT ESP32 DEVKIT V1, once the ESP32 is connected to the PC with a USB cable youll need to figure out which port it’s on and select the correct port as well.</p>

<p>You’ll need to install the correct libraries to get it to compile properly as well, you can search the Arduino IDE library manager for CAN by sandeep Mistry version 0.3.1 or go to git hub and download the code as a zip file and link to it from the IDE library manager. <title>Help Needed with Setting Up Carloop GPS on My Vehicle</title>

<p>I am trying to get my Carloop GPS up and running in my car, but I’m stuck! No matter what I try, I can’t seem to get a signal.</p>
<p><strong>Here’s what I’ve done so far:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Plugged the Carloop thingy (is that what it’s called?) into the OBD-II port in my car.</li>
<li>Downloaded the Carloop library onto my Particle device (hope I did that right!).</li>
<li>Uploaded the sample GPS code to the device (fingers crossed!).</li>
<li>Checked the Particle console for GPS info, but it’s blank.</li>
<li>Double-checked everything, and the device seems connected, but the GPS data is missing in action.</li>
</ul>

<p>I was recently working on a CNC project and using a Blackbox X32 controller along with Nema 23 stepper motors. I’m experiencing some issues with the setup and could use some advice from those who have experience with similar configurations.<br>
Here are the specifics of my setup:</p>

<li>Blackbox X32 controller</li>
<li>Nema 23 stepper motors</li>
</ul>
<p>But I am facing some specific issues like:</p>
<ol>
<li>Sometimes the motors skip steps or move erratically.</li>
<li>The motors and controller seem to get quite hot after a short period of operation.</li>
<li>There’s a lot of noise from the motors during operation, which I suspect might be due to improper tuning.</li>
