Picture-in-Picuture Support ?

I’d like to request support for Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode. This feature would greatly enhance the user experience by allowing videos to continue playing in a small floating window while users interact with other parts of the app or switch to other apps

Thanks for the clarification. I understand that this feature depends on the upstream project libmpv from mpv.

Picture-in-Picture would be really helpful for improving the user experience. I was wondering if there are any chances that this could be supported upstream in the future.

I also noticed that at least one app seems to provide PiP using mpv internally (possibly through some custom or hidden implementation). If upstream support ever becomes available, would this project consider integrating it?

If libmpv supports it, it can generally be enabled through option settings, but the PiP feature requires avfoundation support; as far as I know, Metal cannot achieve this.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense regarding libmpv and the dependency on AVFoundation.
I came across an implementation in another app where PiP seems to be achieved by extracting video frames (or sample buffers) from mpv and feeding them into an AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer / AVPictureInPictureController pipeline, instead of relying on native mpv rendering.
Do you think something like this would be feasible in this project? For example:
using mpv’s render API to access frames
converting them into CMSampleBuffers
and driving PiP via AVFoundation
Or would this be too complex / out of scope for this repo?

Does the other app use OpenGLES for rendering? Currently, the gpu-next VO does not support the render API, so it is not possible to access video frame data at this time.
